Get Skilled stands

Dedicated Get Skilled stands offer in-depth knowledge about certain industries. You can discover new talents and try loads of different skills when you get hands-on with a Get Skilled activity. Experts are always on hand to help as you learn something new and try work-based skills; the aim is to ensure each Get Skilled stand represents a different career sector so we promote as wide a range as possible to you, the visitors.

At Skills Scotland Aberdeen 2017:

Get Skilled in STEM
Presented by Aberdeen Science Centre
Use the infrared camera to find out which objects or body parts emit the most heat or take a virtual reality tour of an oil rig or wind turbine using a VR headset and get a real feel what life is like working in this environment.

Get Skilled in Health and Social care
Presented by NHS Grampian
Test and learn key skills using SIM man in airway, breathing cardiac and circulation. Use the built in patient monitor to read the vital signs or check for a pulse on this high fidelity mannequin. In addition there will be professionals from a variety of different job roles including: Mental health, Cardiology, Nursing, Laboratory services, Health Care sciences, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and many more available to speak to on the day.

Get Skilled in Computing, Nursing & Engineering
Presented by Gender Equality North
East Scotland Break away from gender bias by taking part in a variety of activities designed to challenge stereotypes. Get involved in giant Velcro matching games or try a quiz to win some prizes and find out what careers would suit you best in your future.

Get Skilled in Creative Media and Music Technology
Presented by North East Scotland College
Get some hands on experience at mixing music and mix a track using industry standard pro-audio software or experience what it is like to deliver a news presentation to a camera in a TV studio environment using a green screen.

Apprenticeship Theatre

New to 2017. The Apprenticeship Theatre in association with Skills Development Scotland
This will offer a full programme of exhibitor led seminars promoting the new Foundation Apprenticeship options for S4 students. Sessions will have a limited number of spaces and booked groups will be given priority to attend. Please see below the full list of talks for 2017:

Careers Hub

This Careers Hub is an area is where you get the chance to have one to one advice from the experts. Topics including careers advice, interview skills, volunteering and starting your own business.

Presented by Aberdeen Foyer, The Careers Hub is where you can learn employability skills, get advice on your CV and receive key budgeting and financial information.

Live News Board

The Live News Board aims to provide you with the chance to find out about current vacancies available in your region including, job vacancies, volunteer opportunities, traineeships, apprenticeship schemes and any other opportunities. The exhibitors post these vacancies on the Live Opportunities Board at the event for you to view. Ensure you take a look so that if any interest you, you have the chance to speak to the organisation face-to-face at the event and find out all you can about the role. This is a great way to get ahead of the competition, so don’t forget to take a look!

Test your basketball skills and challenge your friends with Aberdeenshire Council

Try your hand at forestry by using a simlog to pick up logs with Scotland’s Rural College

Get a close up look at a police motorcycle with Police Scotland

Drive an articulated dump truck, control a tower crane or negotiate steering a truck and trailer using Go Construct’s plant and construction simulator

Got what it takes to work in early learning and childcare? Visit the Scottish Government Early Learning and Childcare stand to take a short quiz to find out if you could shape children’s worlds and discover your career.

Have a go at farming using Ringlink Scotland Ltd’s simulator game. Try driving a combine tractor and other farmyard machinery all while finding out what opportunities they can offer you.
