How do you know if a particular career is the right one for you? Unless you can gain a real insight into the job itself, it is hard to know for sure. That is why Skills London is a must-visit. Aimed at 15 to 24 year-olds and their families, this free two-day event, brought to you by London First and delivered with Prospects Events, is an opportunity to discover a range of career paths, traineeships, apprenticeships and higher education opportunities.
Every year, around 33,000 young Londoners, teachers and parents visit Skills London, and this year there will be 55,000 job opportunities on offer from hundreds of leading employers, including headline partner Deloitte. So, there will be something for everyone, and plenty of opportunities to be inspired. Through interactive, hands-on activities and demonstrations, young people can experience different jobs, and bridge the gap between what they enjoy doing and what they could potentially do. Why not try your hand at broadcasting live, get a taste for being a chef, or have a go at coding? You can experience being a paramedic, working at the cutting edge of construction, or see if you can cut it in banking, or fashion buying at Tesco.
Skills London makes it very easy to discover more about the kinds of careers and opportunities on offer, by grouping employers into zones. The whole event is split into sectors to help you navigate your route to success. Each zone is colour-coded to help you find your way around, and offers a flavour of what careers, training and help is available in that industry or sector. These zones include STEM (with a construction hub), business and finance, the creative, hospitality, retail and leisure sector, and a zone for public services, health and care. You can also check out the careers and enterprise hub and uni street, and there is a campus, education and training zone where you can find out about the huge range of vocational courses, A-levels and apprenticeships available in the capital from a selection of London-based colleges and other learning organisations.
