Skills London: Schools’ Perspectives

We asked two schools to tell us about their experience of Skills London 2017….

Lister Community School

Why did you choose to attend Skills London?

We chose to attend Skills London as we wanted to give our students the opportunity to meet with a wide range of industry professionals and discover the huge variety of careers / opportunities available to them.

Did you prepare your students before attending Skills London by using our resources?

Yes, we informed our students about the event beforehand and provided them with the Skills London resources, which were really handy and helpful. This allowed our students to be fully prepared so they could make the most of their visit.

The event was really engaging, productive and very well organised. The students found the event highly beneficial; they became much better informed and aware of the opportunities available to them as a result of attending. I would strongly recommend Skills London to everyone so they can experience all of the fantastic opportunities that are brought to our door for young people.

Why did you choose to attend Skills London?

We wanted our Year 12 students to understand the wider options available other than just the university route. We are keen to expose them to a range of companies and employers to discover more about higher and degree level apprenticeships.

Did you prepare your students before attending Skills London by using our resources?

Before attending the event the students were shown the Skills London PowerPoint presentation during a lesson, in addition to using the other resources available on the Skills London website. We also put hyperlinks to the Skills London website in our sixth form bulletin for the students to access.

We were very impressed with the event and the range of employers present. It was extremely well organised. The majority of the students were very positive and enjoyed speaking to employers as well as finding out more about different courses / training programmes.

What do you think the long term benefits of attending Skills London are?

Although the majority are still committed to a traditional university route it made them more aware of different companies and employers and I hope this will help them when making choices next year.
