Prospects Events already aligned with Government Careers Strategy

At the end of last year the Department for Education published its careers strategy ‘Making the most of everyone’s skills and talents’.

As the market leader in delivering careers, jobs, education, skills, training, apprenticeship and recruitment events across the UK, we fully support the strategy through the work we do by helping young people understand the range of opportunities available to them. Free to visit, our series of annual events enable young people, parents / carers, employers and training providers to come together under one roof.

During 2017, we welcomed over 90,000 visitors and over 1,000 exhibitors including employers to our events; creating thousands of opportunities for young people.

The Rt Hon Anne Milton, MP Minister of State for Apprenticeships and Skills and Minister for Women sets out three aims within the strategy:

  • All young people to understand the full range of opportunities available to them, to learn from employers about work and the skills that are valued in the workplace and to have first-hand experience of the workplace
  • All young people in secondary school and college to get an excellent programme of advice and guidance that is delivered by individuals with the right skills and experience
  • Everyone to get support tailored to their circumstances. All adults should be able to access free face-to-face advice, with more bespoke support for those who most need it

Our annual skills events support all of the above by providing young people and their parents / carers with the opportunity to discover careers through interactive, inspirational activities and demonstrations. The high level of interactivity exhibitors use to engage with the young people enables them to visually bridge the gap between what they enjoy doing and what they could potentially do as a career and the relevant training required.

The strategy recommends that secondary schools and colleges should offer every young person at least seven encounters with employers during their education. By working closely with these establishments in different regions across the country, we are able to offer careers professionals the opportunity to fulfil this and brush up on their own CEIAG knowledge at the same time. We also provide schools and colleges with free resources prior to their visit to ensure students are fully prepared with a lesson plan and supporting notes including Gatsby benchmarks.

In addition to our skills events delivered across the UK for young people, we also organise a dedicated series of events specifically for careers advisers, teachers, coaches and other professionals passionate about promoting careers. The National Career Guidance Shows provide all visitors with free CPD, accredited by the Career Development Institute, and supports the aim that all young people receive advice and guidance from those with sufficient skills and experience.

Nina Hurst-Jones, Events Operations Director at Prospects Events, comments:

“We understand the importance of offering students a chance to engage with employers at our skills events to ensure they are aware of the full range of opportunities available to them. Likewise, it is also vital that careers professionals receive the information required through our National Career Guidance Shows to provide excellent careers guidance in schools and colleges”.

We also asked some of our visitors to feedback:

“Pupils get a lot out of this event and have a clearer direction after the event. Many are excited by what they have learned and are motivated to apply for courses and apprenticeships straight away’’ (Teacher).

“I found out there are more apprenticeship choices available to me than I initially thought” (Student).

“This is the first time my son has been to an event like this. Seeing all the opportunities that kids of this age have, has given him confidence that he will progress to a good career” (Parent).
