Poppy is on the path to becoming an apprentice firefighter within the London Fire Brigade and is gaining valuable experience along the way

Poppy, Admin Support within the Grenfell Tower Investigation and Review Team at London Fire Brigade tells us about her plans to become an apprentice firefighter which all started at Skills London…

“I went to Skills London in 2017 because I was unsure of what options I had for my future career. Skills London has lots of organisations under one roof and they were all available to speak to me about the opportunities available. I approached the London Fire Brigade to speak about my options, hoping they could tell me more about the role of a firefighter and how to go about applying. I spoke to a handful of really helpful individuals who described the firefighter role and what it entails, as well as different admin jobs within the brigade that I had not known about before. I took an interest in a job within the London Fire Brigade LIFE Programme, whose role is to perform intervention for young people who have faced challenges in their lives. The youth intervention leader who spoke to me was really welcoming and enthusiastic, and we exchanged contact details which led to me getting a job as a Youth Intervention Assistant with the team.

I worked in the LIFE team for a while and then transferred to the Grenfell Tower Fire Investigation team when an admin job became available. This has been a fantastic experience, however my ultimate goal is to become a firefighter. Having successfully completed the application process, I am now awaiting the training date to start my firefighter apprenticeship programme. I am really excited for the future and to begin my career as a firefighter for the London Fire Brigade!”
