Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester highlighted the opportunities for young people at Skills North West

Skills North West is Greater Manchester’s largest careers, jobs, skills and apprenticeship event, which took place on 20 & 21 March 2019 at EventCity. The event is aimed at 14-24-year olds and their key influencers; teachers, parents and carers and provides a fantastic opportunity to discover a range of career paths, traineeships, apprenticeships and higher education options under one roof.

The event welcomed visitors from all 10 Greater Manchester boroughs in addition to visitors from further afield such as Blackburn, Blackpool, Cheshire, Denbighshire, Lancashire, Sefton and Warrington. Through interactive, hands-on activities and demonstrations, young people can experience different jobs, and bridge the gap between what they enjoy doing and what they could potentially do as a career.

Andy supported the event and delivered a keynote speech at 12.20pm followed by a Q&A with young people, parents and teachers, on Thursday 21 March. Andy comments:

“Skills North West is a fantastic event which empowers and informs young people across Greater Manchester. This event is the largest of its kind in Greater Manchester and offers young people a chance to meet employers, colleges, universities and training providers and allows them to explore the range of opportunities available to them. It was exciting to meet so many young people who are interested in their future and I look forward to attending the event again in 2020.”’

Andy Burnham also discussed his commitment to a range of initiatives for young people including opening the city up by providing free bus travel to 16-18-year olds through The Opportunity Pass, removing barriers to transport to help young people access education, employment, training and socialising. He also talked about the upcoming Careers Platform that will provide easy access to and information about all post-16 opportunities, and the ongoing work with employers through projects such as the ‘Meet your Future’ work shadowing campaign launching on the 24th April.

Skills North West will be back at EventCity, Manchester on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 March 2020.
